The U. S. Food and Drug Administration today approved a new medication to treat hair loss that is the first of a new class of drugs that was approved to treat the condition known as male pattern hair loss.
The drug is Propecia, which has been sold under the brand name Proscar, and is known as the drug Merck & Co. Inc. or Merck. Propecia, which is approved for sale in the United States and is available in the United Kingdom, is the most commonly prescribed drug for hair loss.
"The decision to approve Propecia is a significant milestone in our effort to help patients in the United States and abroad," said Dr. Mark F. Hough, Director of the U. Food and Drug Administration. "This approval will provide patients with access to a more effective, FDA-approved hair loss treatment," he added.
Hough said Propecia is available in three strengths, which is the brand name of the drug, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. The generic version, Proscar, was approved by the FDA in 2003.
The medication works by blocking the production of a substance known as an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase, which plays a key role in converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). By reducing DHT levels, Propecia can help reduce hair loss and slow down or stop further hair loss. It is approved to be taken orally or by injection once daily.
